Rita’s journey, marked by perseverance and a commitment to education, began in the Bronx, where she overcame personal hardships, including the loss of her mother at a young age. Despite adversity, she graduated from Hunter College in 1948 while working seven days a week to support herself. Her passion for helping others led her to become an award-winning teacher and assistant principal, dedicating her career to underprivileged children.

Cindy, inspired by her mother’s resilience and values, described the gift as a way to honor the lessons she learned growing up in a household centered on education, family, and opportunity. This endowment enables Hunter Hillel to expand its programs, providing support in key areas:
